Lifting a camera to my eye shapes my perception of reality. But while stealing that moment from life's timeline it can offer some agency within the turmoil. I have found that in emotionally difficult times, the act of taking a photograph can have me momentarily lifted above the scene. Participant becomes observer, and instead of the grief washing over me, I am actively engaged with it and able to navigate to a place of acceptance and closure.
A boat on a river, or an off-grid cabin in the woods, can both be a home that challenges us to engage more deeply with the world around us.
